To deal with depression, I looked for things I could do to encourage my moods, like getting lots of rest, engaging in things that make me feel joyful, and providing myself with love and attention.
And yet I would say that depression isn’t entirely like dealing with a child who’s upset. Depression is an illness. It isn’t your normal mood that just happens to coincide with a bad day, or a bad moment, or a bad circumstance. It’s a permanent condition of the mind and the body. With depression, you deal with a problem not through a deal or an outcome, but with the exact opposite of what most people would be able to do.

• Take a break. Go to bed early or get a few hours of sleep. Make a list of the things you want to get done before you lose your mind. Do the very least you can in the immediate time frame you’ve been given.
• Try to stay healthy. Eat healthy and eat properly. Exercise. Do something that makes you feel physically good, and exercise is an important part of feeling good mentally.

• Pray. Ask the Father in Heaven to help you and give you the help you need. Look at your life and the situation you’re in. Listen carefully to how you feel. Find a way to feel your way out of your current state.
• Take care of yourself. Do the things you need to do to get yourself physically and mentally healthy. Stay away from things that are likely to bring you down. Drink plenty of water. Exercise. Eat healthy. Do things that you think will make you feel better about yourself.
• Look at the situation and how you would deal with it. You don’t have to react to something like depression in the exact same way. Don’t act out violently against depression. Resist the urge to get angry at a situation that you can’t really control. Things are not always as they seem. Even if you would act the same way as your depression, you don’t have to deal with depression the way depression would.
• Deal with depression by looking at it in a different way than most people would. Be curious about it. Understand why you have it. Take the time to think about it. This is the mental health equivalent of thinking about what will happen if you take an aspirin rather than a placebo. Take the time to see what it’s really like to deal with depression, instead of giving up and taking the therapy that’s presented to you and thinks you need, because it sounds good, but you know in your mind that it won’t really help you.
• Deal with depression by learning how to deal with it. Use coping skills and understand the ways in which they help you to deal with depression. Think of it like solving a puzzle. If you solve the puzzle, it makes the puzzle that you already have better. That’s what coping skills do.
Get a therapist and learn how to deal with depression by doing the right things to deal with depression. Get professional help, and learn the right techniques.
